Longview the review

My autumn gig calendar continued this week as both myself and Rich rushed over to the 2nd stage at the Birmingham Carling Academy for Long-View, the band have changed their name and matured their sound imensly. It had been two years since they played a gig, we had seen them though at a HMV instore between gigs, I had first found them supporting Easyworld back in the uni days.

The support, Fell City Girl brought a mix of emotional driven music, the power of which was overwhelming and fully met expectations of what a Longview support band should be, loud, anthemic and emotive perfect for the mini moshers that were in abundance.

Hear a sample of lead singer, Rob Mcvey chatting with the audience: It’s been a year, no 2 years!

Just as the crowd was near to overheating, the five lads from Stockport gracefully took to their repsective instruments and the Longview set kicked in with an old favourite. The band are masters of taking a track building up the sound breaking into an emotive mid section and breaking it all back down again pausing for thought and then breaking out again. As tearful as ever the full impact of the lyrics to “Further” took me to another place, a place where facing death is no big deal, a place where you can be saved.

God’s love will save our light and we’ll come shining bright, God’s love will save our sun and thy will be done” … Lead singer Rob, said that this summed up the last 3 years for the band that it was their Further, but certainly for me this track sums up some emotions in regards to facing the reality of my own mortality, with god and the sun somehow being in the mix, thy will be done.

The set flewby with floating guitars, harmonies and thumping drum and bass lines, by the time the encore came round we all had a chance to sing along with “Can’t Explain”, it was such a nice expereince to hear everyone singing the main lines of the track, I only had images of Rob staring at the sun, in the video, again on this level something I can associate with. Throughout the night Rob was very communicative to the crowd and very pleasent, towards the end he said that the comming year would be a very special year for the band and he hopes that we will be part of it.

Hi Lee. I remember interviewing them once for student radio. They’re really a great band aren’t they!

By the way. I’m playing at the AppleAcoustic night at the Adam and Eve in Digbeth tonight (Monday 7th). It’s FREE and should be a good night. Would be lovely to see you there! Starts around 8.30 I reckon…
