Ex-Hurricane Vince drops by Spain

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

Spain saw the tail end of an atlantic storm recently. Vince managed to make his way from near Florida to Spain, just as Maria managed to make her force known in Norway. Either way two atlantic storms have hit Europe as Britain sees a painful reoccurance of localised flooding and traffic chaos.

“Tropical storm Vince became the first tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in Iberia on Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and winds to southern Spain and Portugal, meteorologists said.” Source

Second Tornado Strikes in Birmingham

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

Just a mile down from where the last Tornado struck, Birmingham today sees another blow. Coming at a time when most of the region was stuck in traffic jams due to heavy rain and flooding.

“Commuters sat in traffic jams for hours as the city’s main roads ground to a halt - Birmingham once again under siege from the elements.”Source

“We all felt the wind blow right through the building and wondered what was going on, then we heard a big bang. The worst damage was to a business across the road, something like a wooden pallet was picked up and hurled through the roof. It is still sticking out of it.

The weather conditions are similar to those of the afternoon 28 July when a tornado struck the Moseley and Kings Heath parts of the city. ” Source

With no major solar activity to report after Septembers fist-o-flares the weather conditions in the area must have been just right.

Ever wanted to boil that kettle without moving a leg?

“Fear not, for PG Tips have invented the SMS kettle. You can now put the water on to boil at the flick of a switch.,..oh, sorry, touch of a button. Just text “switch on” to your kettle’s phone number (there are so many things wrong with this…do you want your kettle to have a phone number?) and it will oblige.”Source

Walsall Illuminations

Sunday, October 9th, 2005

Last night myself and the family paid a visit to the local legend that is Walsall Illuminations. Staged in the main greenland area in Walsall town centre, the venue is a flooded quary, known locally as the Arboretum. I remember the event from an early age and it could have helped spark my huge interest in light. This time it was nephew’s turn to be introduced to the wonder.

There are more photos, descriptions and short histories of the event to be found by wither clicking the title of this post or by reading the full entry

Update : time for action

Friday, October 7th, 2005

Not much to report on the front line, to be honest for now Melanoma is letting me get on with things almost a year on. This time last year I was awaiting the very first biopsy results.

I have noticed a briuse appear very close to my less serious Melanoma site. Do you think I have the information, experience or opinion to know what that means? I’m forever changed. The whole thing has the potential of suddenly ending, without good reason or obvious symptoms. I don’t think the s**t has started hitting the fan with my cancer yet, as they say one year down four more to go.

The year has ticked by and stories such as that of Alex Lines have filled my screen, headlines of 23 year olds being killed by this cancer. I just have the urge to use my time to educate my peers. Young adults need to be told about skin cancer detection, because as children they already knew about prevention. I knew about prevention, somehow things aren’t fair. Young people aren’t aware of the danger signs, I wasn’t when I was a teenager, I wish I was.

Texan night in Birmingham

Friday, October 7th, 2005

Texas came to town after a four year break from touring. Last time it was the NEC this time a downscaled Academy right in the city centre. It was a quality night, support act didn’t seem to go down well in the crowd though. Driving back home with the hits on the MP3 player it was a really enjoyable night with pleanty to talk about.

Sharleen Spiteri, lead member of the band, spent a lot of time interacting with the crowd which was really nice, as heard in this sound byte.

Sunday, October 2nd, 2005

Can’t wait for this is be on TV, it’s coming in the BBC Autumn Schedule. An investigation at the location of the 9.2 Quake on Boxing Day 2004. I have been tracking this documentary since the start of the year, it has been splashed in many Scientific publications, looks to be quite interesting.

“In an attempt to understand the devastating wave that shocked the world on Boxing Day 2004, Journey To The Heart Of The Tsunami accompanies an expedition of top scientists as they explore the seabed site of the catastrophe. ” Source
