Texan night in Birmingham

Texas came to town after a four year break from touring. Last time it was the NEC this time a downscaled Academy right in the city centre. It was a quality night, support act didn’t seem to go down well in the crowd though.

Most, if not all of the Texas greatest hits were played which pleased the crowd and we got two encores during the 1:45h set, lead of the band, Sharleen Spiteri spent a lot of time interacting with the crowd which was really nice, as heard in this sound byte. Commenting that Jaffa Cakes aren’t cakes as such she proceeded the whole night with

One highlight was being encouranged to sing along to “Say What You Want” with a basic acoustic instrument set while Sharleen sat upon a stack of giant speakers holding her mic to the crowd, in typical “Now it’s your turn” style.

“Inner Smile” was an obvious anthem, during “Halo” I was imagining myself holding up a banner saying “Loved the summer of ‘97″.

For some unknown reason a chatty group of girls posistioned themselves right behind us, chatting away rather than ignoring them I turned around and said you’re missing a great gig. From then on they certainly didn’t stray too far away, whenever a well known track was kicked off I shared a dance! No video and no photos exist, but the one girl was really cute and sweet. By the end of the night she said I was lovely and she wanted to take me home, unfortunatly I was there for the music and had to drive my mate back home. So that made being on the balcony more interesting! Almost perfect view and dancing/singing partners in an otherwise “crossed armed I’m too cool to join in, but scared of getting squished at the front” type of crowd on the balcony.

Driving back home with the hits on the MP3 player it was a really enjoyable night with pleanty to talk about.

    Hi Lee,

Ah, gotta love the Academy! Was there the other day for the Ramshackle Indie night.

By the way, I’m playing at the Cellar Door night, Actress and Bishop, Ludgate Hill (kindof near Birmingham’s Jewlery Quarter) this Wednesday 12th, £3 on the door. Also playing are Magnetic Four (who I think are really great) and special guests. Fancy coming along?
