Glee : David Ford
Last night was ace, myself Rich and Kel headed for the Glee club in Birmingham to see David play in the small room known as the studio. The Glee is such a nice venue. Anyway we took our seats as me and Rich were at the bar David came out instead of the support band, who couldn’t make it, as he warmed us up with two covers “Heard It Through The Grapevine” and a Smiths cover.
The stage was set out as almost a kind of park scene, with a bench, a mini tree and a very scaled down old gas type street latern with a candle dimly lighting up the screen that was on the back wall. His keyboard was right near us, littered with various harmonicas, reminding me very much of the episode of Futurama with Beck! We were inches away from the bench, there were about 60 people taking seats at various sporadic places.
Dav(id) Ford is such a talented guy words can’t describe what he manages to achive. Sounds that seem to eminate from one man, bassically is one way of looking at it, starting from silence and using a loop recording device he builds up a percussion section to work with and then takes it from there. Not only is his voice supberb, his lyrics are well thought out and very emotive.
He broke into “This Is Where I Stand” as a few Easyworld fans in the room, including us three shared a special flashback to those days. That was certainly a highlight as was seeing again the wonderful “State of The Union” track. He has a backing female vocalist and during that track she paints on a canvas that has a projected motion picture beamed underneath it.
We hung back at the end, I spoke to a few people I hadn’t seen since a set of Easyworld gigs along time ago and we managed to meet Dav(id) have a chat and get the new single signed. The canvas was offered to me after I asked what happens to them but I hadn’t drove into town, plus where would I have hung it?
All in all a fantastic night in one of our favourite venues in the city. One of the lyrical highlights for me was certainly the following few lines in “A song for the road”.
A Song For The Road
And the sun, it set fire to the heavens
On the hills over Sheffield tonight
As I sail over this countryside with new friends and old
We are nowhere, but man we’re alright.I know someday this all will be over
And it’s hard to say what most will I miss
Just give me one way to spend my last moments alive
And I choose this, I choose this, I choose this
I choose this, I choose this
I choose this, I choose this, I choose this
I choose …. this
A Short Song About Shoes
Now you continue chasing something that is quicker than you,
I guess that everybody does it and heaven knows I do,
So maybe every lover has a taste for the blues,
Maybe I’ll never walk a mile in your expensive shoes,
