European weather not sign of human activity

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

“Torrential rains have caused havoc across central and eastern Europe, killing up to 34 people”. So as fires rage in Portugal (Arson suspected), Floods ravage more central parts and freak winds belt across Northern parts, you’d be easily lead into a discussion about global warming. Mainstream media are begining to report that these events may not be attributed to global warming, I bet they won’t go as far as saying freak weather is partly or mainly caused by the sun (common sense really), but hey it’s a start.

Power Cuts > More emerges

Saturday, August 20th, 2005

So is the power cut becoming a seasonal hazzard for the world or what? About 17:00 today in the UK it went mental, underground cables causing a lot of these cuts. Perhaps we should all be aware of this, charge up some batteries have a few candles at the ready.

Black Country Jam and Power Cuts

Friday, August 19th, 2005

It all started about 17:10, there was an abnormally bad load getting into Wolves and then out of Wolves, Lorry fire on the M54, heavy traffic on the M6, sheading that on to the local roads as the V Festival goers were piling onto the local roads trying to avoid the Mways. Walsall was said to be like a car park and my M6 exit was said to be grid locked.

Extensive traffic light outages

Thursday, August 18th, 2005

While driving into Birmingham yesterday the traffic lights were out on a busy section just outside of Wolverhampton City Center, strange but ok not that uncommon, I guess. Since yesterday there has been a marked increase in the incidence of traffic light outages around the region, good old RDS has been keeping me in the loop. The traffic report today said, yet more lights were out and then acident after acident too.

StormWatch over W.Midlands

Thursday, August 18th, 2005

I’m thinking that people in the Midlands will be wondering what the TCOD is supposed to mean around 10 pm to midnight. Watch for development after 1800 h mainly, both from the cells now present on radar in southwest and from more activity that will develop over the west Midlands this evening.

Aug 15 2005: Emergency services tackled flash floods as heavy rains battered North Wales at the weekend. Firefighters were called out as freak August weather left houses standing in inches of water.

Office workers still ignored in cancer warnings

Tuesday, August 16th, 2005

I can’t help it, but I still look on skin cancer warnings as being falsely advertised, if we are ever to have any chance of reducing the seriousness of Malignant Melanoma we have to take the issue much much more seriously and move away from beaches, holidays and tans.

Oil hits $66.55

Friday, August 12th, 2005

Now I have been reading it could take 5 years for these prices to really affect our pockets. Current world events are masking the fact that supply just cannot keep up with demand (85m barrels a day), this is what the term Peak Oil refers to. Even if you don’t drive, public transport and other forms of private transport, like air travel is gonna feel the pinch first, then anything else derived from oil is gonna become unstable, plastics of all kinds, things we take for granted. How high will it go before it hurts and can we absorb and put up with £1.50 a litre or will govt intervene to prevent fuel poverty?
