US agrees climate deal, non-Kyoto

“China, India, South Korea, Japan and Australia and the US account for nearly half of world greenhouse gas emissions. The US-led initiative would tackle global warming with new technology supplied to countries most in need. Critics say the new compact undermines Kyoto and is likely to be ineffective because it is non-binding. ” BBC Article

So this split reminds me of Microsoft vs the W3C. A standard is setup accept a few parties disagree and splinter off into a new standard. This could seriously undermine the future of tackling climate change, an almost double standard that while Europe is under tight limits on emissions, the rest of the world remain lax and ineffective, this move could condem the developing world to using our technology as opposed to starting from their own starting point, in terms of renewable energy, they instead get our technology and nobody gains ground on the move away from fossil fuel!

“One of the Bush Administration’s initiatives, called FutureGen, aims to develop coal-fired power stations that essentially emit no carbon dioxide”

FutureGen would then still be focused around fossil fuel, all hail the energy crisis of the future!
